Emily Gann

Head Coach

Emily Gann starts her 12th year as Guilford's fourth head volleyball coach and continues her restoration of the Quakers' winning tradition. Through effective and prolific recruiting, she has gradually raised Guilford’s competitiveness and roster size. A year ago, Guilford finished with a 12-14 record, good for fifth (6-5) in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). The Quakers advanced their first ODAC Tournament since 2012. Guilford has had five students combine to win All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honors under Gann's watch, including Brittany Freeman '13, a two-time all-league selection and the school's seventh first-team honoree.

Gann joined Guilford’s staff in July 2006 and coached with the Piedmont Triad Volleyball Club (PTVC) from 2003-2010. She started coaching and has helped two PTVC teams to the U.S. Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships. The Piedmont Triad 16 team placed 28th at the 2005 championships and the 2006 Piedmont Triad 17 squad finished 17th. Gann has also coached top high school volleyball prospects with the North Carolina High Performance Team.

A four-year letter winner at Elon University, Gann became the school’s first All-Southern Conference volleyball performer as a second-team selection in 2005. She helped coach Mary Tendler’s Phoenix to their first winning season since 1997 and led the team in kills and hitting percentage. Gann graduated ranked among Elon’s career leaders in kills, blocks and aces. Her 480 kills in 2003 stood fourth all time and earned the team’s Most Valuable Player Award.

Gann earned her bachelor’s degree in special education and worked at Asheboro Middle School before coming to Guilford. She played high school volleyball for Dee Hodgin at Asheboro High School and club volleyball with the PTVC and the Central Carolina Area Volleyball Association. She received her Increased Mastery and Professional Application of Coaching Theory (IMPACT) certification from USA Volleyball.

The former Emily Hayes, Gann and her husband, John, married in July 2008 and reside in Summerfield, N.C., with their daughters, Madison and Peyton.
